Communicating Through Signs

American Sign Language Therapy

American Sign Language (ASL) Therapy is a specialized form of communication therapy that teaches or supports the use of ASL as a primary or supplemental language for patients who have experienced hearing loss or speech impairments due to a traumatic event. In a rehabilitation setting, ASL therapy helps clients rebuild their ability to communicate, connect with others, and participate fully in everyday life after injury or illness.

What causes the need for ASL Therapy?

People may require ASL therapy as a result of hearing loss, neurological trauma, or vocal impairment caused by:

  • Motor vehicle accidents involving head or brain trauma,

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affecting auditory or language centers in the brain,

  • Stroke or neurological conditions that result in loss of speech or hearing,

  • Surgical complications involving the vocal cords or auditory system,

  • Workplace or environmental injuries leading to partial or full hearing loss,

  • Progressive conditions such as hearing degeneration made worse by trauma.

Referrals to ASL therapy are often made when a patient can no longer rely on spoken communication and needs an accessible, reliable alternative.

Key aspects of ASL Therapy

ASL therapy is highly individualized and can be adapted for people at any stage of recovery. Key elements may include:

  • Introduction to basic ASL vocabulary and grammar for daily communication.

  • Hands-on practice with fingerspelling, gestures, and visual cues.

  • Rehabilitation-based language goals, including functional communication at home, work, or medical settings.

  • Support for family members and caregivers to learn ASL alongside the client.

  • Integration of assistive communication tools such as video interpretation or ASL learning apps.

  • Cultural competence and connection to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

ASL therapy sessions are often conducted one-on-one and may be delivered in-person or virtually, depending on the patient’s needs.

Benefits of ASL Therapy for patients recovering from trauma

ASL therapy provides life-changing communication access for patients who have lost their ability to hear or speak. Benefits include:

  • Restored independence in expressing needs, emotions, and ideas,

  • Improved emotional well-being by reducing isolation, anxiety, and frustration,

  • Enhanced connection with family, care providers, and the community,

  • Greater participation in rehabilitation, legal processes, and daily routines,

  • Support for long-term adjustment to new communication methods after injury.

At Alliance, ASL therapy is part of a comprehensive recovery program for clients adapting to life after trauma. Our goal is to ensure that every patient has a voice, whether spoken or signed.
