Vehicle Modification Assessment
Vehicle Modification Assessment evaluates an injured patient's ability to safely enter, exit, and operate a vehicle. Conducted by an occupational therapist, this assessment focuses on identifying physical or cognitive limitations and determining whether modifications to the vehicle are required for safe and independent travel.

During the assessment, the clinician may review the patient’s medical history, mobility needs, driving ability (if applicable), and vehicle type. The evaluation includes a physical examination, trial of vehicle access and seating, and measurement of assistive equipment (transfer boards, hand controls, wheelchair lifts, etc.).
When is a Vehicle Modification Assessment needed?
This assessment is commonly recommended for individuals who:
-
Have sustained spinal cord injuries or limb amputations,
-
Use mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers,
-
Experience chronic pain or limited range of motion,
-
Have neurological conditions affecting movement or balance,
-
Are recovering from motor vehicle accidents.
