Active Exercise Program

Active exercise programs are structured, movement-based rehabilitation plans designed to restore strength, mobility, and function after an injury. These programs focus on active participation — patients perform tailored exercises rather than relying solely on passive treatments.

Active exercise is a cornerstone of recovery after traumatic injuries, helping patients rebuild their independence and prevent long-term complications.

What do Active Exercise Programs treat?

Active exercise therapy is beneficial for:

  • Muscle weakness and deconditioning after injury or immobilization,

  • Reduced joint mobility and stiffness,

  • Chronic pain and postural imbalances,

  • Poor balance, coordination, and gait instability,

  • Return-to-work and return-to-sport conditioning,

  • Recovery from concussions (graded, symptom-limited exercise),

  • General rehabilitation after orthopedic or neurological trauma.

Key aspects of Active Exercise Programs

Active Exercise Programs may include:

  • Individualized assessment of mobility, strength, and endurance,

  • Progressive strength training and resistance exercises,

  • Flexibility and range of motion routines,

  • Balance, stability, and core strengthening drills,

  • Cardiovascular conditioning to improve stamina,

  • Functional movement retraining for work and daily activities,

  • Education on safe movement patterns and home exercise programs,

  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustment to support recovery goals.

What happens during a session?

Each session begins with a warm-up and a guided review of progress since the last visit. The therapist then leads the patient through a series of targeted exercises, gradually increasing intensity as strength and confidence build. Sessions may include resistance bands, free weights, stability equipment, or bodyweight training depending on the injury and goals. Patients are encouraged to take an active role, learning proper form and practicing exercises they can continue at home.
