What is the role of a catastrophic case manager?
A Catastrophic Case Manager is a specialized healthcare professional responsible for coordinating and overseeing the complex medical, rehabilitative, and support needs of individuals with life-altering injuries. Serving as the central point of contact, the case manager ensures seamless communication between the patient and all relevant stakeholders. Their primary focus is on guiding patients through a long-term recovery process while helping them access all available resources to improve their quality of life.
Situations that call for CAT case management
Catastrophic case management becomes essential when an individual is deemed to have sustained a catastrophic impairment as defined under Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), often as a result of:
-
Severe motor vehicle accidents (MVAs),
-
Traumatic workplace injuries (WSIB cases),
-
Devastating slip and fall incidents,
-
Other life-altering traumatic events.
Once a catastrophic designation is made, the individual is eligible for expanded benefits, making case management crucial for ensuring timely access to treatment, assistive devices, and community reintegration supports.
Case managers act as the central point of contact between the patient, family, medical professionals, and insurers, ensuring that recovery and daily living needs are fully supported. Their goal is to provide seamless transitions, safe environments, and the resources required for the injured person’s best possible quality of life.
