Psychological Treatment

Psychological treatment refers to the use of evidence-based therapeutic techniques by licensed psychologists to help patients recover from emotional, cognitive, and behavioural challenges, especially those arising after a traumatic event or injury. This form of therapy addresses mental health symptoms that interfere with recovery, rehabilitation, and daily functioning. Psychological treatment may include talk therapy, cognitive interventions, and trauma recovery strategies tailored to each patient’s needs.

When is a Psychological Treatment needed?

Psychological trauma, chronic pain, loss of independence, and sudden life changes can cause serious emotional and mental health difficulties. Triggers that may indicate the need for psychological treatment include:

  • Experiencing or witnessing a traumatic accident,

  • Struggling with chronic pain or disability,

  • Feeling overwhelmed by legal or financial stress,

  • Developing anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),

  • Difficulty adjusting to new life circumstances after injury,

  • Cognitive or behavioural changes following a brain injury.

Timely referral to a psychologist can help stabilize symptoms, support functional recovery, and improve long-term outcomes for both clients and their legal or medical teams.

Symptoms that may require Psychological Support

Patients who may benefit from psychological treatment often exhibit:

  • Emotional symptoms: Persistent sadness, anxiety, fear, irritability, or emotional numbness.

  • Cognitive symptoms: Difficulty concentrating, memory issues, intrusive thoughts, or mental fog.

  • Behavioural symptoms: Social withdrawal, sleep disruption, avoidance of tasks or places, or substance use.

  • Physical indicators of stress: Fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, or increased pain due to emotional strain.

When left untreated, these symptoms can delay recovery, and interfere with rehabilitation plans.
